Open Side Speculums
Open Side Speculums are specialized surgical retractors designed to provide exposure in deep, narrow cavities by holding tissues apart with blades positioned on one side. Unlike ring retractors that surround the field, open side speculums have a “C” or horseshoe shape, leaving one side completely open for unobstructed instrument access and direct visualization. This design is particularly valuable in spinal surgery (e.g., for laminectomy or microdiscectomy), deep orthopedic procedures, and some vascular surgeries, where the surgeon needs to work directly in line with the retracted tissues without lateral obstruction.
Key Features:
-
Open-Sided Design:Â Provides a wide, unobstructed surgical approach on one side of the retracted field.
-
Deep Cavity Access:Â Blades are often long and angled to retract tissues in deep surgical sites.
-
Ideal for Spinal & Orthopedic Surgery:Â Commonly used in posterior spine procedures and deep joint surgery.
-
Self-Retaining:Â Many feature a ratchet or screw mechanism to lock in position hands-free.
-
Variety of Blade Sizes:Â Available in different widths and depths to suit various anatomies and procedures.
-
Durable Construction:Â Made from surgical stainless steel for repeated sterilization and use.
Achieve deep, unobstructed exposure for precise surgical work. Open Side Speculums from Medic instrument provide the specialized retraction needed for spinal, orthopedic, and other deep-cavity procedures.
